Inside Bay Area reports about a potential asbestos problem for El Dorado County Residents:
Children playing baseball, biking or playing in a jungle gym in El Dorado Hills are breathing high levels of asbestos fibers, amounting to a cancer risk of at least one in 100 for a lifetime of continuous exposure.
EPA today released preliminary results for the first-ever tests on air around active people in the Sierra foothills, and the results show exposures almost as high as those allowed for asbestos miners and millers. But the situation could be worse because El Dorado Hills’ asbestos is considered tens to hundreds of times more carcinogenic than commercial asbestos.
EPA is calling for an expert scientific panel to advise, but the news could deal a serious blow to El Dorado County’s real-estate market, its tax base and its schools.
